The Story Behind Some of My Most Popular Jig Colors

One of the questions I get asked the most is: “How do you come up with your colors?”
Truth is… some of them started completely by accident.
Others came from years of fishing different water conditions across Missouri lakes like Truman, Stockton, Pomme de Terre, and Smithville. Some were inspired by live baitfish patterns. Others were built because customers wanted something different than what everyone else was throwing.
And a few? They just flat-out started catching fish immediately.
WonderBread
Probably one of the most recognized color patterns I tie.
Bright colors, strong visibility, and a pattern that seems to work in all kinds of water conditions. Whether it’s stained water, cloudy skies, or aggressive fish, WonderBread has earned its place in a lot of tackle boxes.
It’s one of those colors that simply gives anglers confidence.

Disco Nights
This one has become a customer favorite.
A mix of flash, darker contrast, and color layering that absolutely comes alive underwater. Photos honestly don’t even do it justice. Under sunlight and movement, it has a completely different look.
This color has put a lot of crappie in the boat.

Bleeding Shad
Built around natural baitfish tones with just enough accent color to trigger bites.
This is one of those patterns that shines when fish are pressured or feeding heavily on shad. Clean profile, subtle flash, and a realistic look in the water.

More Than Just Colors
Most people think picking colors is random.
It’s not.
Every jig I tie involves decisions about:
Contrast
Water clarity
Flash
Profile
Fall rate
Hair movement
Head color
Hook size
Small changes can completely change how fish react.
That’s why I spend so much time testing combinations before they ever hit the website.
Built Through Time on the Water
The best colors aren’t created behind a computer screen.
They’re built through:
Time on the lake
Customer feedback
Guide input
Tournament results
Trial and error
That’s the fun part of this business.
Sometimes a color you almost didn’t make ends up becoming one of your best sellers.
Built by hand. Proven on the water.
